Competent Crew – Program Description
- Course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers
- Experience living on board and really get to know the boat
- Virtually all the course is hands on
- You are the crew – without you the sails won’t go up and the boat won’t be steered
- Pre-course experience – none
- Assumed knowledge – none
- Minimum duration – 5 days, if you have done the Start Yachting course, this course can be completed in 3 or 4 days
- Minimum age – none
- Maximun 5 Students
- Language:- English
- Includes RYA Logbook
- By course end, you should be able to:
- Steer
- Handle sails
- Keep a lookout
- Row a dinghy
- Assist in all the day to day duties on board
- You should also have visited some interesting places and had an enjoyable holiday
Course Content
- Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat
- Familiar with rigging and sails, sail handling
- Ability to do rope work
- Knowledge of fire precautions and fire-fighting
- Understanding personal safety equipment
- Ability to handle “Man overboard” procedures
- General emergency equipment familiarity
- Understanding basic meteorology
- Understanding seasickness precautions and remedies
- Comfortable with helmsmanship
- Understanding general crew duties
- Ability to abide by seafaring manners and customs
- Knowledge of “Rules of the Road”
- Possess sufficient dinghie handling
